A community basketball club for young players across West Lancashire has been handed a summer boost by receiving £750 from a leading housebuilder.
Ormskirk and West Lancs Basketball Club are one of the first winners of Persimmon Homes’ Healthy Communities campaign.
The scheme will see Persimmon give away more than £600,000 to sporting causes across the UK over the next 10 months, with an overall top national prize of £200,000 in addition to numerous regional donations.
The club offers primary and secondary school children the opportunity to learn the game of basketball, and provides session for boys and girls from ages six through to 16.
The West Lancs programme represents the club in the Basketball England North West national league.
Michael Lea, chairman of the club, said: “We are extremely grateful to receive such a generous donation from Persimmon Homes.
“The club is largely run by volunteers who have a passion for the sport and seeing young people progress.
“We are committed to develop not just athletes, but young people, offering the opportunity to partake in coaching courses as well as work at the club.”

Every month this year, Persimmon Homes Lancashire will hand out £750 to either a sports club or individual aged 21 years and under in the area, to be spent on kit, equipment, coaching or facilities.
Then in January 2018, a short list of 30 will then be created for a national final to be decided on a public vote. One individual or group will scoop the £200,000 top prize to create a lasting legacy, with two runners-up winning £50,000 each.
The new fund is in addition to the £720,000 the company already donates through its hugely successful Community Champions scheme each year.

Chris Kershaw, director in charge for Persimmon Homes Lancashire, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Ormskirk and West Lancs Basketball Club. This is a thriving sports club with a strong focus on young people in the community. We wish the club every success for the future.
“Everyone who enters, regardless of whether they win a monthly prize, will be considered as a national finalist. We are looking for sports teams and individuals who have amazing ideas on how to spend £200,000 to come forward.
“We will consider anything from new clubhouses, to training centres, facilities or gyms or it may be people want to spend the cash on the development of future Olympians. We’re very excited to see the projects that are put forward.”
Persimmon Homes Lancashire has new homes developments across Lancashire and Cumbria.
